Solar Water Disinfection is a new and exciting means of effectively inactivating Crypto and Giardia
Chlorine will not kill Cryptosporidium or Botulism without “Hyperchlorination”. Even boiling the water will not kill botulism or Cryptosporidium, that requires 248 degrees Fahrenheit which is not attainable without a pressure cooker.
If you are able to handle complex scientific texts I would suggest beginning with the text of the research article: Batch solar disinfection inactivates oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum and cysts of Giardia muris in drinking water. The article not only covers the fact that solar exposure renders Crypto and Giardia inactive, in other words it kills it. In addition, there is indication that solar disinfection is also effective in rendering Escherichia Coli known as E Coli inactive also.
The implications of these results are massively important in the survival and post disaster scenarios. The fact that solar water disinfection requires no power other than sunlight is a boon to emergency and grid down situations. A little knowledge as to the means and method of the process, coupled with the preparation of having the equipment necessary to effect the process means that anyone, without power, can, utilizing sunlight, efficiently and effectively render water safe of parasites and other microorganisms without the need for commercially manufactured filters, chemicals, or mechanisms.
