Protect Your Property

One of the most common problems post earthquake is that the heater, stove and hot water heaters are connected with rigid gas pipe. These pipes snap off as the earthquake throws around your entire property. The problem is easily remedied by installing a flexible line between the rigid pipe and the appliance. You also need to install a ¼ turn ball shut off valves so that you can immediately turn off the gas. You should also know where the gas main shut off is located in or outside of your home. If you need a wrench to turn it, buy one and tether it to the pipe so it is easily ready.

Similarly you should have a ¼ turn ball valve on your main water shut off too. As with the gas line you should also know the location of the water main shutoff at the curb and have a means to shut it off.

Reduce Potential Secondary Sources of Injury After

One of the things that you need to do is to make minor changes in your home in order to limit secondary threats, damage and deaths.

Secure or remove large or heavy items so that they will not fall and crush or strike you during an earthquake.
Immediately After an Earthquake
•     Go to areas away from potential falling debris.
◦     Earthquakes move entire buildings which were never designed to stay together if                   moved.
◦     Buildings sway as much as a few feet during an earthquake knocking them off of their          foundations and making them structurally unsound.
•     Move outdoors if possible immediately after.
•     Be very alert for natural gas leaks and downed high voltage cables.

What To Do During an Earthquake
•     Take refuge in a solid structure away from anything that could            collapse and fall on you.
•      If you can’t get into a safe structure then get in your vehicle                   and drive for high ground away from overhead power lines and           don’t touch any metal.

Volcanic Eruptions Are Real and Tangible Threat
This is meant to be a primer regarding earthquakes and increasing your survivability when one occurs in your area.

There are at least 20 earthquakes each day around the world and as many as 3-10 each day over 5.0.
