Zippo Lighters
Although the Zippo is not windproof or ultra reliable, I find that it is extremely versatile. it has built in, replaceable flint strikers, you can pretty much fill the wick with any flammable liquid available from gasoline, to kerosene, paint thinner, alcohol, and more. In a pinch the striker will throw sparks without fuel to start a tinder bundle or a magnesium pile. Pack it in a plastic bag with spare flints and you are "in like flint".
The Zippo Lighter is a PracticeSurvival.com Top Pick which you can find at the Walmart checkout line for under $10.00 USD
Fire Starters - Lighters
Not all lighters are the same. There are several types of lighters; butane, refillable butane, Scripto Liquid Fuel lighters, USB rechargeable electronic lighters, and Windproof butane lighters.
Lighters are simple, highly effective, easy and small to carry, but they are not very reliable in less than optimum conditions like wind, rain, snow, or other challenges.
Butane lighters should not be used as the primary fire starting source. They should be a convenience if they work but you should still have the ability to start fire with other more reliable means if necessary. Butane is a gas when pressurizing is a liquid at room temperature. In the cold, the butane won't vaporize in the container enough to sustain a flame. As the lighter is buring, the gas is escaping from the chamber. As the pressure decreases, even in the heat, its temperature drops. As the temperature drops less fuel escapes until the flame fails. Keep the lighter in your pocket and keep it warm until you use it, then shake it a little which will also atomize the butane.
That is why a fire kit consisting of a Magnesium block, rod, Ferrocium Rod, and scraper is a PracticeSurvival.com Top Pick.
