Fire Starter - Flint & Steel
(The Original Fire Kit)
Flint and steel were the primary means of fire starting for people dating back over 1500 years and possibly more. The new version of flint and steel is the fire steel, known as a Ferrocium Rod fire starter . A ferrocium rod is the alternative to flint which is hard to find now a days. The flint is used in tandem with fire starter material which takes alight easily with a spark, such as char cloth, cotton with vaseline or some other highly flammable target material.
When you scrape rapidly the flint with the sharp corner of a piece of high carbon steel the resulting chips of flint spark and burn briefly transferring their heat energy into your tinder bundle and target fire starting material causing them to ignite.
