Short Sightedness
Threatens Our Survival

Unfortunately, since 1992, the US government with the help of the news media and Hollywood have “taught” our citizens that “prepping is for toothless idiots and crazies” who stockpile guns awaiting Armageddon. This tact is in stark contrast to the government’s previous approach to preparedness. News reels in the 1950’s and 1960’s and the Civil Defense Plan that taught preparedness to every school child in the USA. During the 1st and 2nd World Wars the US government implored its citizens to grow victory gardens to sustain their own families in order to allow the limited food resources to be sent oversees to feed the troops in theater. This has created a great void in our citizen's ability to sustain themselves at time of crisis. This conundrum brings me to recall a popular quote in the prepper community by the late Ayn Rand, “You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.”

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter, in his pre-Hurricane Sandy news conference, told people that the city did not have to resources to come save them. He told people in threatened areas to, “make a plan, arrange an alternate place to stay (friends, family, etc) outside of the threat zone, make a “Ready To Go Bag” (Bug Out Bag) and leave by x time. It was simple, bold and refreshing. He was honest and direct, it was refreshing. For once a government body was not placating people by telling them everything will be fine Mother Government was going to take care of them. Finally a hint that people including government is realizing that they will never have enough resources to save and take care of everyone. Mayor Nutter pressed the fact that people needed to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. That is the silver bullet. If we take care of ourselves, instead of expecting others to do for us, when we fall someone will be able to help.

Mayor Nutter and some of his counterparts are to be applauded for their honesty and earnest efforts to help motivate their constituents to survive. Even those who believe that the Mother State can take care of “everything” are realizing that there just never will be enough resources for such an enormous burden. The only hope will be to embrace what most of our Forefathers of this great nation believed; each individual, strong, self sufficient, free standing and self sufficient, standing shoulder to shoulder creates an indestructible force. If one falls, the rest will pick them up and all will stand, together. That is the only hope is to teach our citizens such a simple but empowering lesson.

Though I have experienced and handled numerous manmade and natural disasters here and abroad throughout my career, this experience has raised many points that I will expand upon and apply to my planning and solutions. They will become articles all over the site in different and maybe some new sections.

As a survivalist and prepper there are many hard facts to be highlighted and lessons to be learned. Some thoughts outlined below:
•Having a generator is great but what if gasoline supplies are limited, the outage is long, and others want what you have?
•Would it be better to live outside the population center?
•Could I move to a place less likely to be in the direct line of threat from reoccurring (whatever hurricane, flooding, tornados, etc.)?
•Can I be more low profile?
•Maybe this is the time to trade my low riding BMW for a Jeep or Range Rover?
•Instead of an expensive vacation maybe we should be buying a camper and some land in the mountains?
•Maybe we should visit and make nice with the family in the outlying safe areas so they can be your safe haven to escape disaster to?
