Smokey the Bear Says 9 out of 10 fires can be prevented through care
Be Ready to Put the Fire Out

Fill two five gallon buckets with either water, sand, or loose dirt. Place them within close proximity of the fire. In the event that the fire jumps the containment area or if the wood throws sparks or embers that might start a wildfire.

In the event of a fire, several buckets of sand are more likely to be effective at dowsing the flames than water. Even gasoline, oil, and other class B fires are safely and effectively dowsed by sand. Water conversely can turn to steam and fail to cool the fire to the point of extinguishment.
Be Prepared to Contol the Fire
(Have Water or Bucket of Dirt Nearby)

As discussed in the Fire Safety Section you must be careful to build a small fire. No fire should exceed 3 feet in height or diameter. The smaller the better. It is easier to dowse when you are done, requires less fuel, and is more controllable.
