Now let’s explore the positive side of having a TRAINED Dog on a hike. Trained dogs have gone through an exercise fit program and endurance training. They can jump over downed trees; search the side if a hill and rock climb. They are taught to do it with care, pull you out of quicksand, or even save you from drowning in a lake.
Hunting dogs like Springer Spaniel and Labradors are meant to scare up ducks, geese, pheasants, quail, and that's all. They search for prey and point when they find it. It is what they are taught. But can the same dog save you from a bear? A coyote? A Snake? The answer is a resounding no!!!
The Herding group:
Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, etc. These dogs are trained; they are bred to stand their ground against wildlife. They will make distance between you and the wild animals that you encounter. They will put their life on the line for your safety.
The Working group:
The German Sheppard and St Bernard are primary examples. Their nurturing nature coupled with proper training make them the ultimate search and rescue dog. The St. Bernard is a dog known for the snow. They will dig a trench in the snow for you to lay in for shelter, they are known to lay next to a man who is freezing with hypothermia and keep them warm they are trained to drag a human through the snow to safety.
It is important to recognize that these are TRAINED Dogs not your typical house pet.
