How Fresh Is That Citrus on Your Glass?
Was It Washed?
Did It Come In Contact With Raw Meat?
PracticeSurvival.com highly recommends that you ask for fresh citrus and on the side whenever possible so you can inspect it first
Do you get lemon, lime or orange in your iced tea or other drink? Have the server bring the citrus slices to you separate. Make sure that you tell the waitress or waiter that you don’t want the citrus slice in the drink but on a small plate on the side. Before you put them in your drink or use them elsewhere. Always smell them, check to make sure that they are not dried out, fermented or dirty. You won’t believe how often that the citrus has gone bad or was never washed.
During a recent job on road we spent nearly four months in a hotel eating nearly every meal at a restaurant or diner. It was shocking to find that 8 out of 10 times the lemon slices (the most commonly used) were either dry or fermented. If the location has a bar, you will most often find that the bartender slices the citrus at the beginning of the day and you may be served it as long as 16 hours later sometimes a day later. It is not uncommon that they honestly believe that citrus had some magical quality that allows it to sit out in the air without refrigeration all day.
Be aware, be proactive, protect yourself.
