Take Special Care at the Buffet & Salad Bar
PracticeSurvival.com highly recommends that you clean your hands with either hand sanitizer or fresh lemon immediately after using the tongs.
Never eat with your hands or touch eyes or face before cleaning hands.
Always take food from the bottom and as far back as possible
So you just love that salad bar or buffet? It is great, the selections, the ability to make your own and pick what you like. Hmmm.
When you first get to a restaurant do you go to the bathroom to wash your hands? (Check out the article on the left about sanitary conditions.) On the way out look to see how many of the people who used the bathroom while you were there actually washed their hands on the way out. Then look to see if they grab the handle with those hands... or if they use a paper towel. Then look to see how many of those that did not use the same tongs that you have to in order to load their plate. Were those same tongs laying in contact with the handles in food? Yikes! Well we are not saying you should look like Monk on the TV but you can at least be smart about things; follow the tips for sanitation in the other articles then chose to take the food from the bottom and the rear of the tray furthest from the area where the tongs or spoon rested and the patrons could sneeze or accidentally spit on it.
After becoming aware you may rethink the idea of a buffet. But we believe that you don’t need to panic or be paranoid, just careful and proactive. It is not healthy for us to not have any exposure to germs. But obviously we don’t want to be sickened or worse by E. Coli, salmonella, or other health threats.
What can you do? Before you eat bread or other items with your hands use a lemon slice to wash your hands after touching the tongs at the bar. When you are getting items from the salad bar, be careful to avoid items that are cold and never take uncooked items such as spinach, lettuce etc. that are next to meat items like shrimp, chicken, etc.. You have no idea if these items have been accidentally cross contaminated by the meat. Since spinach and the like and cold there is no way that the contaminants of the meat can be made safe on the greens, etc. Steer clear of those items. You can ask the server or management person for some fresh greens normally with little trouble.
