Personal Exposure:
Do not eat, drink, smoke, rub eyes, bite nails, touch skin (face, mouth, ears, etc.), apply makeup while in proximity to a contaminated area.
Wear protective clothing that can be removed once contaminated.
Heavy coveralls, rain suits, gloves, boots, full face masks, goggles.
Seal all gaps, breaches, cuts, cracks and connections with duct or other sufficient tape.
Use full respirator; preferably full face mask with filtration rated at least, for asbestos and chemical VOCs.
Always wear sufficient breathing apparatus to assure that no radioactive material is inhaled or swallowed.
Avoid all physical contact with radioactive materials.
Proximity to Contaminated Areas:
Always assume that all materials, equipment, and personnel that were in the effected are have been contaminated.
The farther that you are from the source of radiation, the lower the dose of radiation.
Use shovels, mops, brooms and other objects to move materials out of the way.
Monitoring:
Must be performed on a regular and ongoing basis with proper measurement devices is crucial.
Shielding:
If you do not have shielding apparatus or gear:
Limit exposure time
Utilize barriers to reduce exposure levels and contact.
Contaminated Materials Handling:
If there is any doubt always err on the side of caution; assume contamination.
Limit the amount of contaminated materials and items in any one area in order to limit your exposure levels.
