Shielding the Human Body from Beta Radiation
Normal dry clothing and fire and rescue turnout gear provide effective shielding from Alpha radiation. Any outer protective cover reduce or eliminate the direct contamination of the skin by radioactive materials.
Beta-emitting contaminants may be harmful if deposited internally.
Beta radiation can penetrate human skin to the "germinal layer," where new skin cells are produced..
If beta-emitting contaminants are allowed to remain on the skin for an extended period of time, they may cause skin injury.
Beta radiation may travel meters in air and is moderately penetrating.
Some beta emitters produce very low energy
Poorly penetrating radiation that may be difficult or impossible to detect.
Examples are carbon-14, tritium, and sulfur-35.
Alpha radiation cannot be detected with an ionization chamber.
Some Geiger Meter instruments cannot detect alpha radiation and some low energy beta radiation. Because alpha radiation is non-penetrating, it cannot be detected through even a thin film of water, blood, dirt, clothing, or through probe cover.
