Shielding the Human Body from
Gamma Radiation and X-rays

Shielding requires dense materials like lead sheets and thick concrete barriers. Normal clothing and even fire and rescue turnout gear provide little to no effective shielding from penetrating radiation. Any outer protective cover reduce or eliminate the direct contamination of the skin by radioactive materials.

Gamma radiation is detected with survey instruments, including civil defense instruments. Low levels can be measured with a standard Geiger counter, high levels can be measured with an ionization chamber. Instruments designed solely for alpha detection ( ie. alpha scintillation counter) will not detect gamma radiation.

Pocket chamber (pencil) dosimeters, film badges, thermoluminescent, and other types of dosimeters can be used to measure accumulated exposure to gamma radiation.
Energy is emitted from a source and passes through another material or through space.

Gamma Radiation and X-rays are an external and internal hazard to humans
Protect yourself from radioactive materials that emit gamma radiation and X-rays

Gamma Radiation and X-rays are electromagnetic
Gamma rays and X-rays are the most excited and powerful type of electromagnetic radiation

Gamma Radiation travels:
Through the Air several meters (over 10 ft)
Penetrating Human Tissue
Several centimeters (over an inch)
Gamma rays and X-rays are penetrating radiation
Gamma radiation or X-rays frequently accompany the emission of alpha and beta radiation.
