1989-10-17
On October 17, 1989 at 09:04 UTC (5:04 pm local time) in Loma Prieta, Northern California; 60 miles south southwest of San Fransisco a massive 7.1 earthquake occurred. The quake caused the collapse of two 50 foot long segments of the bi-level roadway Interstate Rt 80 on the San Francisco -- Oakland Bay Bridge and 3/4 of a mile of RT 880; the Cypress Street Viaduct

During the aftermath of the earthquake fires broke out as a result of gas leaks from broken connections to heaters and hot water heaters. Many people were injured after the quake ended by falling debris. The real problem did not begin until night fell on the first day after. Looting and violence broke out everywhere, all while volunteers and EMS worked feverishly to rescue those buried in the rubble.
