As mentioned above Hatchets and axes are edged tools designed primarily for chopping, cleaving and hewing. Hatchets and axes are often misidentified. Generally speaking hatchets are on handed and axes are two handed tools (though there are “hand axes”). Many people mistakenly believe that the difference is the length of the handle. The single determining factor that makes a hatchet different than an ax is the shape of the head. The three heads below are Hatchets.
Axes & Tomahawks
Hatchets and Tomahawks are used one handed and are applied to smaller and more precise cutting and hewing jobs.
Axes are generally utilized for more brute force cutting jobs. They are available in a variety of head configurations for specialized tasks. The heads below are various Ax heads from 1929. The chart can’t depict the most significant trait,; the angle of the edge and the thickness of the leading edge of the blade. The ax has a thicker and more steep edge.
