Iron Bacteria in Ground Water
Abating Iron Bacteria
Well heads, pumps, and casings should not be laid on the ground where Iron Bacteria can hitch a ride. Always disinfect the components prior to putting them into the well. If you use surfactants which often contain phosphates, must be followed by the use of chlorine. If you do not cleanse with chlorine the bacteria will use the phosphates as a food source.
Oily, slimy, red, orange, discoloring your toilet, and tub? You probably have iron bacteria. Iron bacteria combine iron (manganese) and oxygen to form deposits of “rust”, slimy bacterial cells attaching them to well pumps, the walls of pipes, and your plumbing fixtures.
According to the Department of Health the bacteria are not known to cause disease, but it is best to kill them where possible as they cause the conditions to be ripe for other more threatening microorganisms to grow.
