The movement of the tectonic plates and volcanic activity around the world are often linked. Simply put a combination of the rotation of the earth and the pressures caused by the heating of the earth's crust by the molten magma underneath cause shifts and slippage of the plates against, over or under each other. The results of such activities formed mountain ranges, deep crags, cracks and upheavals altering the landscape of the earth. Add in urban structures and population centers and you have a recipe for massive casualties and property destruction.
