According to the US Department of Environmental Protection:
"there is not a body of water in the USA which is not contaminated"
Water contamination comes in basically two flavors; Biological and Chemical.
Not industry causes all chemical contamination. In the Gulf of Mexico for example, crude oil leaks into the gulf every day, not from commercial oil wells but from naturally occurring fissures in the sea floor. The largest amount of fecal matter and bio-waste in the "fresh water" system is a result of animals. Animals frequent the waterways for water and hunting prey. The animals go in the water and the fecal and other bio-matter washes off their bodies into the water as well as their defecating in the areas close to the body of water. As a result, microorganisms like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are in pretty much every body of water in the USA and likely the world.
That is why purification and filtration of water has become so important.
